On 22 May 2020, the Specialist Leisure Group Limited (“SLGL”) and its subsidiaries were placed into administration. These subsidiary companies included Shearings Limited and National Holidays Limited. Over 2,000 employees lost their jobs with immediate effect.

When a company proposes to make 20 or more employees redundant from a workplace in a 90-day period they have a duty to collectively consult the affected workforce before the first of the redundancies takes place. If an employee is dismissed without such consultation, they can seek to recover compensation by pursuing a protective award claim in the Employment Tribunal.
