Good Divorce Week 2022

Each year Resolution, a national organisation of family lawyers and professionals raise awareness of issues that are important to their members through their ‘Good Divorce Week’ Campaign.

This year the campaign runs from Monday 28 November to Friday 2 December. Our Head of Divorce and Family Law, Noelle Heath, and member of Resolution shares her thoughts on this year’s campaign.

What is “Good Divorce” Week?

Good Divorce week is an annual initiative run by the organisation, Resolution. This year the week aims to highlight the crisis in the family courts and raise awareness of the different ways families can resolve their disputes away from court, where it is safe and appropriate to do so. It also explains how members of Resolution can guide families through the process.

Why is it important?

The campaign raises awareness and provides information to separating families about how to embrace a child-focussed approach to divorce and separation.

Children can often find the experience of seeing their parents separate a challenging one and it can have a negative effect on their lives.

Can you really have a “Good Divorce”?

“Good divorce” is an interesting phrase as in some ways it is entirely contradictory. The build-up to a divorce is a relationship breakdown, which may have been lengthy, upsetting and sometimes acrimonious.

The principle behind a “good divorce” is to try to reduce conflict and the impact divorce has on the children and the wider family.

I believe it is possible to have a “good divorce” providing the parties separate amicably with respect for each other, putting their children’s needs first and limiting the overall impact on the children and wider family.

What is Resolution?

Resolution is a community of justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way.

It was set up in 1982 by a group of family lawyers who believe a non-confrontational approach to family issues would produce better outcomes for families and children.

Their vision is for families facing change are supported to achieve constructive outcomes by a community of committed family justice professionals.

The organisation is involved in influencing policy and improving the way family justice is delivered.
