Shoulder Operations Recalled at Private Healthcare Site

A private healthcare company has confirmed it will recall patients amid concerns about a surgeon’s operations.

Following the recall of 600 patients by an NHS trust who had undergone shoulder surgery performed by Mr Munawar Shah, Spire Healthcare has committed to responding to concerns over Mr Shah’s private shoulder operations.  The recall is at the recommendation of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Earlier this year, investigations into the surgery conducted by Mr Shah revealed that the treatment provided to some patients had been inadequate. Some patients lost the use of their arm, whilst others now live in continuous pain. Spire Healthcare apologised to patients where inappropriate treatment was proven, stating that they took such incidents extremely seriously.

However, concerns over Spire Healthcare’s surgical standards have been raised in the past. In 2020, 217 patients of another shoulder specialist were recalled, and in 2017 Ian Paterson was jailed for performing unnecessary procedures on women at Spire Parkway in Solihull.

Unlike with Ian Paterson, there is no evidence of any criminal or illegal activity with regard to the orthopaedic surgeons at Spire. Nonetheless, Mr Shah has not operated at Spire premises since March 2020. Spire Healthcare said it had radically changed in recent years, with their CQC scores, patient outcomes and patient satisfaction scores now very high as there are “rigorous” processes in place to oversee the practise of independent consultants.

What to do if you are concerned that your operation has been sub-standard?

If you believe that an operation you have undergone has been performed incorrectly, there are steps that you can take. It may be beneficial to submit a letter of complaint to establish the facts surrounding your operation. If you are not sure what to ask, we can help you with that letter to help you get the answers you need.

In addition, you may have a claim for medical negligence. This would involve an investigation into what has happened with evidence obtained from independent medical experts to ascertain whether the treatment that you have received has fallen below a reasonable standard. In pursuing this route, you could secure funds to cover your past and future financial losses caused by the injury, as well as compensation for your suffering. This could help you to get the care and treatment you need to move forward with your life.
