A clicking good cause

We’re pleased to have been able to support a fantastic local charity through staff fundraising and our CSR scheme.

Hookers & Clickers Do It For Charity is a group which meets online and in person to crochet (‘hooking’) and knit (‘clicking’) clothes, blankets, toys and other items to donate to good causes.

Since it began, the group has donated 106,658 items to 97 hospitals, hospices, baby banks, food banks, care homes and charities or organisations that are in need. Their items go across the country and even as far as Ukraine.

The group was founded back in 2017 by Jo Brophy and now boasts over 244 makers on their Facebook page. A group meets in-person every Wednesday in Kirkstall, Leeds to hook, click, chat and create. The group is made up of ladies from all backgrounds: some are retired or have disabilities; some have mental health issues; some are newly widowed.

Jo has created a safe space that is welcoming to everyone. She says:

“My aim is to make everyone feel useful again, that they can still contribute to society and to bring them together to talk, laugh, and make friends whilst they are giving charities what they need.”

Each member donates £2 per session they attend. This money is used to pay for everything they need — wool for the group to knit or crochet with, postage to send the made items off to the charities, and money to pay for the space they use at Kirkstall.

Jo continues:

“Although the members are on government pensions and the cost-of-living crisis is making things financially harder, the ladies still contribute to keep the group going”

Our donation has helped to ensure that the rent the group pays on their space in Kirkstall will be covered until the end of the year. Watch this space as we’ll be visiting “H&C” in the near future to try our hand at some knitting!
