COVID-19 – SSP for ‘Clinically Extremely Vulnerable’ Employees

The Government has issued new regulations relating to statutory sick pay so that employees who have been classed as ‘Clinically Extremely Vulnerable’ by the NHS are now entitled to SSP if they are shielding. For the avoidance of doubt, this is the group of people who should have received a letter from their GP advising them to shield.
Prior to 16 April, employees who fell into this category were not entitled to receive any pay if they were shielding. Many key workers in this category were forced onto unpaid leave as they had not been furloughed by their employer.
This change feels like a sensible step forward to protect some of the most vulnerable people in the UK workforce.
