Record Number of Patients Waiting for Hospital Treatment

Figures show, a record number of patients were waiting for routine treatment at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust and Airedale NHS Foundation Trust in June 2021.

Patients Waiting for Hospital Treatment at Bradford Hospitals

During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic many hospitals, healthcare clinics and GP surgeries changed their normal services and focused on preventing the spread of the virus, meaning many vital treatments, outpatient appointments and elective surgeries were postponed along with screenings/tests for a range of health conditions.
As a consequence, NHS patients are now experiencing longer wait times for treatment as hospitals struggle to get through the backlog of patients. Health Secretary, Sajid Javid warned waiting lists across England will keep rising and the number of people waiting for NHS hospital treatment could reach 13 million in the months to come.
At Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 31,768 patients were waiting for elective operations or treatment at the end of June, which is up from 29,932 at the end of May. This is an increase of 69% more compared to the previous year, when 18,809 patients were on the waiting list.
At Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, 9,182 patients were waiting for treatment at the end of June, which is up from 9,150 at the end of May. An increase of 37% compared to the previous year.

Delayed Treatment Claim

The NHS was already struggling to keep pace with the growing demand for elective care prior to the pandemic and COVID-19 has made the situation considerably more difficult. Although the long-term repercussions of this are yet to come to light, it is feared many patients’ conditions have deteriorated due to the impact of delayed medical care.
Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, mistakes can and will still happen. The effects of medical negligence can be physically and psychologically devastating. Whether you’re wanting to make a formal complaint or pursue a claim for compensation you could prevent the same from happening to someone else.
