The COVID-19 pandemic has been blamed for the collapse of the businesses after they suffered losses during the two national lockdowns. Despite efforts to find potential buyers for the businesses, the deterioration of the retail sector made this process complex.

Peacocks and Jaeger Redundancies

Unfortunately, there are more than 4,700 jobs and almost 500 shops at risk. Although at this current stage no redundancies and store closures have been announced.
When an employer plans to make employees redundant they must follow the correct procedures. If there are 20 or more redundancies at one place of work the employer must collectively inform and consult all employees at risk of redundancy. Failure to follow the correct procedures means employees may be eligible to bring forward a protective award claim.

A protective award is a claim for compensation for employees when their employer didn’t follow the correct procedures when informing and consulting on redundancies. If the claim is successful then employees can be awarded up to 90 days’ pay. The Insolvency Service can pay up to 8 weeks of this award, which guarantees employee redundancy entitlements.
