Final amount raised for Candlelighters

We asked our staff to vote to choose our Charity of the Year – Candlelighters won with an overwhelming majority. We wanted to show our support for a charity that has affected many people within our community and this is our way of giving something back.

Our proximity to the charity enables many of our staff to get involved on a regular basis with activities and also provides the opportunity for them to meet many of the children and families who are affected see first-hand how Candlighters support them.

About Candlelighters

Candlelighters is a Yorkshire based charity supporting children with cancer and their families. They offer practical, emotional and financial support to all the 150 children diagnosed with cancer every year in the county.

They provide support to these families in the following ways:

  • Providing Play Leaders on the Inpatient Ward, Outpatient Clinic and radiotherapy department at the Children's Hospital in Leeds, as well as social workers who support the families.
  • Every family with a child under treatment is offered a holiday.
  • Funding into local research about childhood cancer.
  • As well as funding equipment and roles within the LGI they have been able to create welcoming and comfortable spaces there for families.  This includes a family room as well as the Pavillion building.

They also have a Family Support Centre which offers a haven away from the hospital environment where families can go for physical and emotional support. They organise groups for parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, including taking siblings on days out to give them the support they require too.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down in an instant. Not just for the child but for their parents, siblings, family and friends.

Priorities change and everyday concerns suddenly seem trivial. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, physically, emotionally and financially.

Helping and supporting those children and their families is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago and it is why they are still here today.

Help us spread the word

All the money we raised will go towards the £250,000 renovation of a new cottage accommodation for families to stay in whilst their children are receiving treatment for cancer in Leeds.

More accommodation is needed as the current accommodation provided by Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust has a waiting list of at least ten families per night. Candlelighters already give £24,000 a year to help fund this accommodation.

Wimbledon Themed Event

"You cannot be serious!" We held a fun Wimbledon themed fundraiser for Candlelighters last week. Thanks to those who organised and took part and Jake who stepped in as our honorary John McEnroe. The event raised £100.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge

11 Morrish members of staff  scaled the 3 highest peaks in Yorkshire on 5 May 2018. 26 miles and an ascent of over 1000m! What an absolutely amazing experience. It was extremely tough, but the team finished all 3 Peaks. Despite all of the aching limbs and sunburn, it was worth it to raise £2,200 for Candlelighters

Morrish Bake-Off

Our 7 Partners were tasked with creating a bake each, with each cake going out for votes to staff and the general public. Many thanks to our wonderful Partners, who despite being so unbelievably busy, made time to make some really impressive cakes! The lucky winner was Laura Nabozny – suffice to say that the cakes didn’t last long and there were just a few crumbs left at the end of the day! The event raised a fantastic £150.00 for Candlelighters.

Many of our staff helped with wrapping  and sorting donated presents for the children's Christmas party at The Square.
